Whithorn is the cradle of Christianity in Scotland, pre-dating Iona as an early Christian settlement by around 300 years.

As a result, there has been much archaeological work carried out in the town and wider area with many nationally important artefacts uncovered. Early Whithorn was also a major centre of pilgrimage by the Kings and Queens of Scotland.

The Whithorn Trust charts the history of Whithorn and is well worth a visit during your stay here.

The nearby Isle of Whithorn is a picturesque harbour village with stunning views out to sea. The Isle of Man is just 18 miles off the coast and can be seen, along with the English Lake District, on clear days.

Wigtown (15 minutes' drive away) is Scotland’s National Book Town with around 14 bookshops, an osprey visitor centre in the magnificent County Buildings and the UK’s biggest Local Nature Reserve with hundreds of bird species to be seen on the mud flats of Wigtown Bay.

Newton Stewart, (25 minutes' drive away) is the Gateway to the Galloway Hills and adjacent to the Galloway Forest Park, Britain’s largest forest.
